Before Your Surgery

Important information you need to prepare for your procedure

All endoscopy procedures require that you must be fasting (ie. no food or drink) for a period of time before. You will be given advice about the time for fasting. Please follow the instructions carefully.

Endoscopy is performed in a hospital setting, usually as a day case. Sometimes it is necessary to admit patients the day before for the preperation, if there are other health problems.

You may choose to have your endoscopy at either a private hospital or public hospital. There is a longer waiting list in public hospitals and you do not have choice of doctor. Sedation is required for endoscopy procedures.

For patients having a colonoscopy or some types of surgery, it is essential that the colon (bowel) be thoroughly cleaned and emptied of all solid matter. This enables our doctors to see clearly during your procedure.
